Kale Grant Patterson

Well, now that Kale is a whole week old it's high time he was blogged about by his mommy. Here's how it went down:

Last Saturday I went with my parents to meet up with our great friends the Wayments to watch their daughter's soccer game. Becky Wayment is a labor and delivery nurse (she actually was the nurse who helped deliver me!) and she said it would be a good idea for me to do some walking. For any of you who don't know, at this point I was a week past my due date, so we were all ready for this little guy to get here! So, I did some walking and I started having small, inconsistent contractions. They would pop up here and there throughout the day and at about 5:00 I told Tyler that he should prepare himself for something to happen. However, at about 6:00 they stopped and I didn't believe they would be coming back. I was scheduled to be induced Sunday night anyway.
But then, at about 1:00 AM I got up to go to the bathroom and when I got back into bed...WHAM, I was hit with a pretty strong contraction; and then another one not too far behind it. So, I woke Tyler up, told him I was having contractions and that he needed to help me time them. The first two were 4 minutes apart, the next one came 3 minutes later. Tyler was up and getting things together in record time. I went and woke my mom up to ask her how long they needed to be consistent before I went to the hospital, and when we told her they were coming 3-4 minutes apart she just said, "You guys better get going." Tyler was way ahead of her. He already had everything by the door and ready to go. My dad tried to help me put some shoes on, but my feet were so swollen that we had to opt for flip flops. We got to the hospital (Timpanogos) at about 1:30 and I got my epidural around 3:00. Let me just pause to say that epidurals are the greatest invention known to mankind. Also, my anesthesiologist was hilarious which made the whole experience even better. From that point on I spent the morning progressing and sleeping. I actually got some of the best sleep I'd had in a while. After they broke my water and gave me a little pitocin, I progressed rather quickly. At noon I started pushing and our little bundle of joy was here at 12:48!

Tyler and I were shocked when they told us how big he was; we thought for sure he'd be in the 6 pound range! We got over the shock eventually and were just so grateful to have him here and that he was so healthy.
Tyler was absolutely amazing and I definitely couldn't have done this without him. He held my hand through it all and constantly told me how good I was doing. He cracked a few jokes and just made me as comfortable as I possibly could have been. As silly as it sounds, I had fun going through this because he was right there with me.

After a couple of hours, the grandparents, who had been patiently waiting, were brought in to see their new grandson.

Nana Gerber was overjoyed!

Grandpa Gerber fell in love with the little guy as soon as he held him.

We stayed at the hospital until Tuesday afternoon and my
parents came to visit us often, which was so fun! All of Tyler's family came to visit us too but they were there for 5 minutes and got kicked out because I HAD to feed him right then and there even though he wasn't hungry!! I was very frustrated that we didn't get to see them longer. However, on Monday Shane came by after work which was so great and then later that night the Richards paid us a visit too! Tyler's mom also came to visit us which was really really great, and on our first day there she brought us a delicious milkshake from Sonic. Love her!

Addison held Kale and did such a good job! And Kolbi was just running around yelling "Kale! Kale! I love Kale!" It was so adorable.

Overall it's been a crazy couple of days. We've gotten a lot of help from all of our family and friends. Thank you to everyone for all your help and support and there will be another update and pictures very soon!
